The owners of Calgarth Cottage have fantastically renovated the cottage to the 5* Lakes Cottage Holidays standard. The pet friendly cottage is now a superb holiday let sleeping 6, close to Windermere. Read on to hear about their journey through buying the cottage, renovations, decorating and now holiday letting.

Here’s a blog about a family with a dog.

We thought we would buy a cottage
on the sly…. So one Saturday we decided to ‘fly’ down to lakes to give
some a try!

We looked at a few, some old some new, but our interest in Calgarth grew and grew…..
One year on and it was all done….we just needed bookings then to come!
A year down the line we seem to be doing fine and Lakes Cottage Holidays are
making it shine!

Well… That’s enough of the rhyme as am having a hard time…now!

We bought Calgarth in the August of 2014 after looking at several places in
Ambleside and Windermere. We had always wanted a holiday home to sneak away
to and we knew Calgarth needed a lot of refurbishment but decided to take
the ‘task’ on. After 3 quotes we decided to go with someone we knew well to
do the worth for us.

Work started in the January of 2015 and was complete by the July. As all big jobs go we started with a price and we did go over budget but it was fab when it was all finished.

Nick who did the work stayed there for 6 months and did a fabulous job so all credit to him. He sent us weekly updates and pictures so we had a blow by blow account of the works going on.
We wanted a holiday home that was done to such a standard it would be like a home from home and we would be happy to stay there too!

Lots of decisions, questions back and forth from Nick and change of plans when things were not going to work out how we wanted, but we persevered on and the end result was worth it.

Decorating It was another discussion and we spent a few late nights looking on line, ordering and arguing over what would look nice! Our sons had an input too…. and even sold us their Xbox to put in! They were determined they were going to get something for it! We even got them to come and help decorate it!
Good planning and patience as well as being ready for bad news/ things that set you back and back! We became well known to North west electricity as they decided part way through to do cable work involving digging up the garden but expected us to be able to get on with our works and not have to halt our renovations. Not happy people when that started but we reached a
compromise!

And of course the garden…. Needed a transformation and it definitely got one!

We have been lucky that people have liked it and it has rented well but Ambleside and Windermere are close by and the scenery around the cottage is blissful and quiet.

Pedro’s restaurant is a short walk away and the BP garage always has things you might run out of but the shops are not far away Booths and the Coop included!

I never knew a big Lakeland store was there but it is a lovely look around. And it’s great for dogs….

David and staff have always been helpful and their advice about things has been very valuable to us with managing the cottage. Our neighbours were very patient with the renovations too.
