Read all about a families visit to The Lake District in January where they took part in
We recently stayed in one of Lakes Cottage Holidays self catering cottages and wanted to share our visit with you all.
Tuesday – We arrived Tuesday after noon and after the drive through the mountains the boys couldn’t wait to get out into the countryside and let off some steam.
We set off in the car to Wray Castle, a mock-Gothic castle sitting on the shores of Lake Windermere with turrets, towers and grounds to explore.
The boys love playing with their toy castle, knights and horses so when we told them we were going to see a real castle they couldn’t wait to go and explore, unfortunately we didn’t get to meet any real knights but they definitely enjoyed the run around the grounds, walks through the woodland area along the shore of Windermere. When we got to the Castle’s boathouse we were met with a swan in which the boys found it hysterical when the swan would bob down in the water with their feet above water, the boys thought they were doing hand stands.
As it was later in the afternoon and very cold there was no-one around which was even better for the boys to be loud and run around.
Once back at our cottage we decided to have a night in and let the boys get an early night. We got a Thai takeaway from Ambleside which was delicious!
Wednesday – Countryside Walk & Kankku Off Road Driving
We got all wrapped up to bare the cold, we had the boys in all in one water proof suits, we have learned from experience that the boys are best to be put in head to toe waterproofs as we know how much they love to jump in puddles and get covered in mud! We set off from the door of our cottage and went for a walk this lead us straight to the pub just in time for lunch.
Wainrights’ Inn is a traditional Lake District pub with award winning real ales, this is a very popular stop for fell walkers and climbers. We warmed up infront of the open fire and thoroughly enjoyed a good hearty warm lunch – including fish & chips, steak pie & mash and fish pie!
This set us up for the afternoon of exciting and adrenaline pumping activities with Kankku as we had booked an afternoon 2 hour off road driving with the Men of Kankku.
We drove into Windermere and swapped over the boys car seats into their one of their Land Rovers and followed our guide. We were lead through many dirt tracks, over mountains, through puddles on our 4×4 driving experience!
We would highly recommend this for a family day out or for a group of friends wanting to view the Lake District from a different angle. The boys absolutely loved the boucing over rocks, and gripping on tight as we were going over the big rocks.
Thursday – Snow Day in The Lakes
We were so excited to open the curtains to find a white sprinkling of snow over every where! The boys just wanted to play in the snow in their pyjammas! The views from our cottage were beautiful, trees covered with a frosting, it looked magical almost like Narnia!
We went walking through the snow to the local Langdale Timeshare and visited the Terrace Restaurant for breakfast most of us enjoyed waffles, bacon and maple syrup! The boys thought it was fantastic playing in the snow then coming in for hot chocolates! They got to build a snow man, ganging up on us all throwing snow balls!
We then drove into Windermere to visit the Brockhole Adventure Playground the boys got to run wild whilst jumping on the scramble nets, zip wires, rope walks, slides and swings.
Friday – Heading Home
We were sad to be packing up our bags again and heading home.
We had a fantastic time and we cannot wait to stay in a Lake District Cottage again soon!
Go and book your family holiday today, there are so many places to visit and things to do you will not get bored! We couldn’t fit it all in three days!
