This unique, iconic, luxury Lake District Cottage is an 'ideal honeymoon cottage in a location to die for', stunning views of Lake Ullswater and the fells can be viewed whilst relaxing on the balcony of this traditional boathouse or from the bedroom through the patio doors.
Unsurprisingly, the Duke of Portland Boathouse has been voted "the best waterside retreat" by BBC Countryfile Magazine! It's location at the top of Ullswater gives it superb, unparalleled views across this beautiful lake.
It is one of the most iconic and most photographed buildings in the Lake District. The boathouse originally belonged to the 3rd Duke of Portland in the 18th century but he had to sell it along with his Cumberland estates to pay his legal bills. His loss is our gain!
Park beside the boathouse and climb the steps to enter a unique, romantic and cosy interior that provides everything needed for a perfect stay at every time of the year. Shades of Farrow and Ball are mixed with sumptuous furnishings and luxury fabrics.
The boathouse has an open plan layout with magnificent cruick beams and underfloor heating beneath a rustic oak floor and comprises:-
- The bespoke painted kitchen with granite work tops provides all you need with a generous breakfast bar and comfortable stools for intimate dining a deux. There is an LPG oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and fridge.
- After dining you can sit back and relax on a sumptuous leather sofa in front of the wood burning stove. TV, DVD and Bluetooth sound system are all provided for your entertainment.
- Unwind in the luxurious slate shower room with overhead shower, WC and hand basin. Fluffy towels and bathrobes are provided together with a range of toiletries.
- Enjoy the views down the length of the lake from the romantic bedroom. You can gaze out at a starlit sky from the comfortable king size bed with luxurious Egyptian Cotton bedding or relax in the slipper bath sipping a glass of champagne!
- Double doors open onto the balcony from which you can truly experience the breathtaking views! An amazing place to enjoy breakfast or just sit and contemplate the beautiful surroundings and its wildlife. Cosy rugs are provided for chillier evenings!
- The boathouse also has its own private jetty and owns a quarter of a mile of lakeshore with fishing rights.
- If you are tempted out of the boathouse, the renowned Sharrow Bay is across the lake and the Rampsbeck Hotel is also a short drive down the lakeside. Both are renowned for fine dining. Alternatively there are traditional Cumbrian pubs in nearby Pooley Bridge.

Wow!! OMG This was a dream come true, We have been so excited to stay at The Duke of Portland Boathouse. It didn't let us down and we didn't want to go home.

I am not a serial reviewer but this place definitely deserves a mention. My wife and I have just returned from an amazing 3 night stay in The Duke of Portland Boathouse. Credit must go to the owners who have done a great job in offering self contained luxury without detracting from any of the original charm. The accommodation provides every amenity that you would expect from a 5 star property. Despite some previous reviews we found the accommodation to be very clean with only a couple of minor DIY jobs needing slight attention - we have to remember that the boathouse is almost fully booked all year round and not every guest is as careful as others, as such the owners get few opportunities to maintain the highest of standards. Indulge with some nice foodie treats, some good wine and simply take in the spectacular views across Ullswater and beyond with the log burner roaring at your feet!! (We arrived to find that a fire had already been prepared for us and simply needed lighting - nice touch) We will definitely return to this beautiful location (if we are lucky enough to find availability) and would recommend it to all. Take the Ullswater Steamer from Pooley Bridge to Howtown and then walk along the lake to Glenridding - lovely walk with great views. Then take the steamer back to Pooley Bridge whilst drinking a hot mulled wine along the way. A hot bath in the deep teak bathtub will add to the indulgence before relaxing in front of the fire......enjoy!! Thanks again to the owners.
We stayed at the beautiful and exclusive Duke of Portland Boathouse at Ullswater, Cumbria and had a wonderful time, cocooned in pure luxury. If you get the chance, do it!
Just a quick note to say WOW what a place! The weather just about held out and she said YES! We had a wonderful time, the Boathouse is truly stunning and we couldn’t have hoped for a better weekend away. Its highly recommended and we will mirror this on tripadvisor. Thank you once again and please pass on our thanks to everyone involved. You are onto a winner with that place. If it’s ever for sale.. let me know!
My first view from the balcony took my breath away, we have loved every minute of our magical stay at the boathouse.

I proposed on our first night on the balcony, watching the moons and stars -- perfect! We shall return as Mr and Mrs.
I booked the Boathouse as a treat for my wife for our 24th Wedding Anniversary. What a fantastic place. I don't know how to surpass it for our 25th!!!!
Had been admiring the boathouse from afar for many years so it was wonderful to be able to actually stay here. Booked it for my husbands 50th and he loved it. The setting is so beautiful and the inside of the boathouse lived up to expectations. We are saving up to come back again for his 60th!
From the moment we arrived this beautiful place captured our hearts, stunning views and a magical feel to this wonderful and very romantic boathouse, the chic interior and old wood fire just added to the vibe...the japanese bath tub was fabulous for a long hot soak after walking around the waterfalls all day. We were truly sad to leave and will definitely be returning...To My Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
We have been staying here for our honeymoon and found the Boathouse the perfect place to unwind after the pre-wedding stress.

We had a very pleasant time in the Boathouse. It gives a special feeling to be staying in such a wellknown 'landmark' as it is a focal point on many postcards, leaflets etc.
Hubert & Margot Krynon
Goes without saying - excellent location. You must watch the sunrise through the mist over the lake!
