The popular seaside holiday resort of Silloth lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty backed by the Lake District fells, the town has views across the Solway Firth to Southern Galloway. Silloth has wonderful sunsets and the landscape artist JMW Turner was attracted here to paint them in the early 19th century. There is an attractive 36 acre open space known simply as 'The Green' between the town and the sea and a wide promenade stretching away to Skinburness. A championship golf course dominates the edge of the town and had been described as one of the top fifty courses in Britain. This is a superb area for walking with the Cumbria costal walk running along the coast line, and excellent bird watching opportunities are also available. Further afield but still within easy touring distance are the many attractions and glorious landscapes of the Lake District.
