Smardale Hall is a most distinctive building, built between the 15th and 16th century, it is of Medieval appearance, with a tower on each corner, the site was originally a 14th century town house. Some of the original fortified dwelling is built into the current structure which is now the farmhouse and adjoining cottage. The farm is located approximately 3 miles from Kirkby Stephen on the northern edge of the Dales, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Smardale Hall is adjacent to an English nature reserve with an abundance of wildlife including red squirrels and deer. Alongside the paddock is Scandale Beck which includes crayfish and frequent visits by herons.
