The border city of Carlisle is known as Cumbria’s county town and is situated north of the Lakes and south of the Scottish Borders. The historic Great Border city is built upon Hadrians Wall, and is close to a wealth of historic attractions including Carlisle Castle, Carlisle Cathederal, Birdoswald Roman Fort and Lanercost Priory near Brampton east of the city.
Whether you want an action filled holiday walking, with afternoons paint balling and quod biking, or a day at the races, or a relaxed day shopping and wandering around Tullie House and Museum it is a versatile place to base your holiday. Great access north towards the Scottish Borders where you can find Gretna Green, and Gretna Outlet Village for those who enjoy shopping, and the Scottish town of Dumfries is also just a short drive away.
To the west of the city you will come across the traditional victorian seaside town of Silloth where you can enjoy fish and chips and a stroll along the Solway Coast. To the east you will find the remains of Hadrian’s Wall and Roman forts, wild Pennine Moors and the beautiful Eden Valley.
Carlisle is 20 minutes from Penrith and 40 minutes from Keswick and Newcastle is just an hours drive away too. Carlisle has excellent transport links including a bus and train station.
