A walk around the paths leading to the pond are worth exploring and a glass of wine whilst watching the sun go down from the summer house positioned at the top of the pond shouldn't go amiss either.     • “As regulars visitors to the Lake district, Buttermere was the best self-catering accommodation so far. Lovely log burning fire, quality fixtures and fittings, quality cooking utensils and cutlery etc. The space is warm, bright, open and airy and there's plenty of room for 4 guests. The bedrooms were fitted out with good quality bedding and there is lots of storage space. Nice big bathroom with plenty of hot water. Outside there is tables and chairs where you can sit and watch the wildlife. Buttermere is surrounded by quiet countryside just a short drive from the Lake District's main attractions. Just a couple of minor areas for improvement. Although the whole place was spotless, a few cobwebs on the ceilings and please set the heating to come on, the morning or night before arrival (especially if the forecast is below 0). We don't often return to the same place but we will be returning to Buttermere, sometime in the future. Thanks for a lovely 5 night, relaxing break.”

    • “Buttermere Cottage is superb. It was everything we hoped for and more. Such comfortable beds, and a well equipped kitchen. Completely suitable for those less mobile, and those for whom mobility is not a problem. It meant that we could enjoy our little escape with our 91 year old mum completely inclusively, which was a joy. Eco friendly too, and with lots of little extras left by the owner; who was so thoughtful. The grounds are wonderful to walk around, completely safe and secure for our little dog. We had the most lovely time, and are sure to return.”

The Property

Buttermere is a Quality Eco Friendly 2 bedroomed, 2 bathroomed ground floor cottage situated in a delightful rural location. The cottage a perfect base for a peaceful family holiday. Buttermere is fully equipped for the disabled with mobility grade 1 and 2 awarded.
Southwaite Green is in an area of peace and tranquillity in the Lorton Vale, almost mid-way between Cockermouth and Lorton both 3 miles away, Keswick is 9 miles to the east. Within a short drive are the less frequented western lakes Crummock Water, Loweswater, Buttermere and Ennerdale, winner of Britains Best View. There is ample walking and cycling opportunities from the door and a wealth of shops and restaurants can be found in both Cockermouth and Keswick.
The properties sit on Paddle Beck giving a peaceful ambience together with 10 acres of grounds including newly planted woodland, wildlife meadow, pond and arboretum. Consequently there is an abundance of wildlife including deer, foxes, red squirrels, badgers and the occasional heron that visits the beck, not forgetting the resident barn owl.
Southwaite Green is a development of four properties that have been constructed in 2007 by the owner, who lives on site, to an extremely high standard. The cottages have an abundance of local timber used by local craftsmen to retain the traditional character and wherever possible used the original timbers from the barn. They have been painstakingly converted using green design and technologies with ground and air source heat pumps to power the under floor heating beneath the slate and oak floors. A design feature has been the use of solar panels and the positioning of the windows to generate maximum solar heating to produce the heating and hot water. Great attention to detail has been paid to ensure that these are Eco-friendly properties, including organic bedding and towels, hand made furniture from sustainable sources and they have even gone to the extent of using Eco-friendly paints. The owners have gone to great trouble to ensure the properties have a low carbon foot-print and to ensure your holiday is an enjoyable experience.
The development briefly comprises two, 2 bedroom cottages, Skiddaw and Esther’s Barn. Buttermere is a ground floor two bedroom cottage which is specially adapted for disabled use with mobility one and two rating and Beckside a three bedroom, three bathroom house. The properties have been given the much acclaimed Gold Award from the Green Tourism Scheme.
Buttermere is all ground floor, fully equipped for the disabled with Mobility grade 1 and 2 awarded, has under floor heating throughout and comprises:

Open plan lounge/kitchen/dining area with TV, DVD player and wood burning stove
Kitchen with electric cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave.

Double bedroom with adequate room for a wheelchair.

Regional Information

COCKERMOUTH Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles. The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
