    • “Great place to stay, close to Keswick, very friendly”

    • “My husband and I stayed here 5-12 July 2017 and we had a great time. It's about a 15 min drive to Keswick but there are lots of other little villages close by such as Bassenthwaite and Braithwaite etc. It has easy access to all the walks around the Keswick area and we did Skiddaw after parking in Bassenthwaite village and walking from there, you can also access Skiddaw from High End B&B - there's a lay-by close where you can park. We also did Catbells on our last day. Every walk is very scenic, and even if you just walk from the accommodation there are lovely villages to visit. Our accommodation was very comfortable and had all necessities provided The king size bed was extremely comfortable and the bedding was lovely Some small issues that we had were dealt with immediately by the management but one small improvement I would add would be a better selection of glasses in the kitchen (bigger wine glasses!!!). The pub below the accommodation (The Black Lion) serves excellent home made and locally produced food and I would personally recommend the lasagne The village of Ireby is lovely and the locals made myself and my husband feel very welcome. We will definitely pay a visit back here on our next trip to the Lake District”

    • “Warm and cosy”

    • “We recently stayed in Emily's Nook, a flat above The Black Lion pub in Ireby, Cumbria.  The flat was clean, warm and cosy.  On Tuesday, we decided to have a meal in the pub, only to discover that meals weren't served that evening.  However, Mandy, the chef, said that was no problem, opened up the kitchen and produced four excellent meals - nothing was too much trouble to her. Not many pubs would have responded in that way.  Many thanks Mandy and Mark, the owner”

Regional Information

IREBY Bassenthwaite 5 miles; Keswick 12 miles. Ireby nestles in the peaceful fells of the northern Lake District, in the beautiful area to the north of Keswick known as 'Back of Skiddaw'. Once a thriving market town, with the market cross believed to date back to 1200, Ireby is now a truly unspoilt, peaceful fell village. The peaks of Great Calva and Knott look down on the village and the nearby Aughertree Fell was the site of a Bronze Age farm and the remains of a pre-Roman road are still in evidence, a unique and most complete settlement from the Iron Age period. Nearby Bassenthwaite Lake itself, while boasting gentler scenery than others in the region, is still one of the most picturesque places in England. Places of interest nearby include Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Lake with small open-air theatre (reputedly frequented by poets such as Tennyson and Wordsworth), Trotters Farm, and Dodd Wood. Most of the attractions of the Lake District are within easy reach and the quieter Northern Fells are almost on the doorstep. The nearby towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, both have weekly markets and offer a good range of amenities. The scenery of the Yorkshire Dales is within touring distance, as is the city of Carlisle and Hadrians Wall.
