“Beautiful location but more suited to a summer/ early Autumn stay as the cottage is freezing, the bathroom didn’t get warm the whole time we stayed, as the towel rail is not substantial enough to heat the size of the room.”

The heater in the bedroom is very noisy indeed but has to be on to have any kind of warmth up there. Downstairs; the door out to the rear of the property doesn’t fit, so the wind blows through the downstairs and makes it extremely cold, the radiator is behind the sofa so again no heat and there is a mock log burner which is an electric blower heater, which when on its highest setting does kick out some heat, but is so loud you can’t hear the television. ...

Stunning location for walking and the views are tremendous but in terms of the facilities it is a summer cottage until they get the heating right. “Superb location for walking and getting in to Keswick, which we did by bike.”

The accommodation was spacious and very pleasantly decorated. There is a residential adventure centre behind the property which happened to have students aged around 10/11 staying. They were perfectly well behaved but noisy! We understand this is not a frequent occurrence but something to be aware of. The garden at the back is shared and open. Perhaps owing to Covid restrictions there was very little in the way of local information in the cottage which is something we appreciate.

The front is opposite a recycling point which is handy but not ideal. You need a team of codebreakers from Bletchley to work out how to use the washer/dryer!

Beautiful walks from the front door. The only thing we were unable to work was the extractor fan for the cooker. But otherwise no complaints. Looking forward to visiting Clairgarth again.

“The cottage shouldn't really be advertised as having WiFi as it's a pay for BT service that isn't in the property and drops out every few seconds/minutes.”

I called the owner and she said not to pay for it as it's not reliable, so I think it would be better to remove WiFi as a feature in this cottage. Sometimes we go away with our work laptops and thankfully we didn't plan to do any work whilst away during our stay...it would have been impossible. The cottage itself was lovely, very clean and was in a perfect spot for hiking from the doorstep. Seeing how busy Keswick was, it was nice to know we were going back to a quiet spot in the evenings.

COVID-19 precautions could hardly have been bettered. We didn’t want to leave at the end of the week. (One confusable point was the apparent lack of a white bag for the bed linen, etc., so we used a drawstring plastic bag of our own. No need to include this in published feedback.)

“When entering cottage there was a stale smell and the floors in the kitchen and bathroom had not been cleaned.”

The tap in kitchen had an internal part missing which meant water sprayed out all over the place. The boiler had an air lock which created a loud vibrating noise when hot water was turned on. The cottage shook as a consequence. This happened for 6 days of our stay and became very irritating. It was a shame this marred our experience as it is a lovely cottage.

“The cottage felt very cosy.”

It is in an excellent location, central to the best spots of the Lake District, e.g. Buttermere and Derwentwater. We went on long walks every day and were always looking forward to return to the cottage. The kitchen is well equipped. The lounge has a TV, DVD player, stereo, some nice books about the Lake District and a cool pub game. We recommend three walks: - Around Buttermere Lake and up the Haystacks (Buttermere is a short drive from the cottage. You can walk, but then the walk gets really long.) - Around Derwentwater (Start from the cottage) - Up the Cat Bells, follow the ridge until Miners Crag, return via Littletown (Start from the cottage)

“Some things you couldn’t change was the weather It rained hard 24 hours a day all week so walking was not a pleasure and the Lakes were closed due to too much water in them.”

One thing you did was exceptional, one morning the shower broke. I phoned at 9 45 am a plumber arrived within the hour, couldn’t fix it then we went out for the day, upon our return we found a brand new shower unit had been installed Finally the cottage was lovely beautiful views HOWEVER roadworks directly outside the cottage with tractors and digger noise from 8.30 till 5pm was disappointing Overall a disappointing break.

“Cottage location, furnishings & decor excellent but as others have commented the cleaning lets it down.”

Had not been vacuumed before we arrived, crumbs on kitchen floor, general rubbish on carpets and we actually wrote ‘please clean’ in the dust on hearth, so hopefully the cleaner may get the hint! Thermostat light in oven has not been working for some time or the extractor hood. Despite these comments we had a fabulous walking holiday but just a pity the owners are being let down.

“Clairgarth was the most lovely cottage.”

Comfortable and well equipped and in the most beautiful of locations. Whilst being within an easy drive of many wonderful locations there was also lots of walking available from the door of the cottage including Cats Bells. A short walk from the cottage was a very good pub - great for an evening meal and a great pint. We loved everything about this cottage and will definitely go back.

“I was very disappointed not to find a hair-dryer in the property.”

All previous properties I have visited have had one. Although the cottage was beautifully decorated with good quality furnishings, the standard of cleaning was poor. Crumbs were evident on work surfaces, greasy fingermarks were on the cupboard doors and the flooring in the kitchen was also unclean. When turning on the lamps in the bedroom the dust on the light bulbs was evident for all to see, as were the cobwebs. I felt that the whole cottage could do with a thorough spring clean. The owners have obviously given a lot of thought to the furnishing and equipping of the cottage so it is sad to see this neglect. Having just reviewed some comments from other users of the property it would appear that the standard of cleanliness has been an issue before and has obviously not been addressed. This shows your company in a poor light. Although there was a pub situated less than a mile away, there was no sign of a shop which, according to your web-site should have also been less than a mile away. There was also no broadband. On a more positive note the views from the cottage were lovely. Please give it some TLC!!

My husband has one fault and that is the main cold pipe that feeds the hot cylinder in the airing cupboard needs a clip(s) on it to stop the vibration when using the cold tap in the bathroom.

“We were unhappy with the noise late at night from Newlands activity centre.”

Also the shower head has not been cleaned for a while.. this needs lookin at.The extractor fan lightening did not work so this needs attention.

“The cottage was very comfortable in a lovely location.”

We loved the views from the windows. You could actually sell the views more and explain there is a nice garden (though shared). Great to be able to walk to Cat Bells from the cottage and we appreciated the book of local walks which was very useful. The kitchen was well provided, but the lighting was dreadful. There were no under counter lights and the lights over the stove didn't work, so it was very difficult to see when cooking, particularly in the evening. The standard of cleaning was mediocre - the sitting room carpet needed vacuuming thoroughly, there was dust and cobwebs in some corners and some of the crockery was dirty. Although the kitchen was generally well equipped, there was no scrub brush or anything to wash dishes with on arrival - it may seem a small point but was actually very inconvenient as there are no local shops.

“We've stayed at this cottage before and we enjoy the location.”

In future we are likely to stay elsewhere for the following reasons. The cost - happy to pay this amount for good quality accommodation but this isn't value for money. The cleanliness of the cottage was not good - black dog hairs covered the carpet and kitchen floor, under one of the tables there were a couple of moulding grapes (not a pleasant impression), and the fire surround was very dusty. Cobwebs can develop quickly in a property too so the odd web is not a problem, but it appeared that these webs were more than a few weeks old - a thorough dusting/clean is needed.

The cottage sits in a row of 5 on the outskirts of Stair in the Newlands Valley, close to Keswick, renowned for its association with Beatrix Potter.

The winding country lanes offer walking and cycling opportunities and, for the more energetic, the nearby Fells of Catbells, High Crags and Swinside beckon.

Water pursuits at nearby Derwentwater, with equipment available to hire in Portinscale, one mile north, make this an ideal location for those who enjoy an active lifestyle.

Bassenthwaite 7 miles, Ullswater 16.6 miles; Cockermouth 13 miles.

The popular town of Keswick is the holiday centre of the North of the Lake District and has plenty to offer the visitor at any time of year. The town boasts numerous shops and restaurants to suit all tastes, as well as offering miniature golf, excellent parks, the famous Theatre by the Lake, a charming cinema, the Pencil Museum, a climbing wall, fishing and great mountain biking opportunities, whilst the beautiful lake of Derwentwater at the head of the stunning Borrowdale Valley is only a few minutes walk from the town centre. Nearby, between Braithwaite and Buttermere is the beautiful Newlands Valley, while picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake is well worth a visit. From a gentle countryside ramble to a challenging hike up Skiddaw or the famous Catbells, there really is something for everyone.
