The Bothy boasts stunning views from every room towards Ullock Pike, Skiddaw, Latrigg and Keswick.

The bustling market town of Keswick is a 5 minute drive, a short bus ride or leisurely walk from the village of Thornthwaite.

Bassenthwaite Lake including its bird watching hide and wildlife and Braithwaite a traditional village with shop, restaurants, pubs and hotels selling good food and real ale are just a mile away through beautiful countryside.

Also nearby, Whinlatter Forest has the longest purpose built mountain biking track in ‘The Lakes&

39;, its visitor centre provides woodland walks, including those suitable for pushchairs a play area and activities for children.

In addition there is a live webcam showing the nearby nesting Osprey (in season).

Many classic hikes and relaxing low level walks can be started from The Bothy.

Maps and suggested walks have been provided by the owner to help both first time and experienced walkers alike.

Sitting at the foot of the Whinlatter and Thornthwaite Forest and between the magnificent northern lakes of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, is the village of Thornthwaite. Thornthwaite boasts a contemporary art gallery exhibiting many local artists and its teashop and the Church of Thornthwaite St.Mary with its origins dating back to 1240 The beautiful Comb Beck runs alongside the village into the nearby lake. Thornthwaite affords fantastic views towards Skiddaw and access to both leisurely strolls and challenging fell walks from the doorstep. The beautiful Newlands Valley is close by and is great to walk or cycle, especially if you like to stumble across pubs and tea shops and its ‘buggy friendly’! The whole of the National Park is accessible from Thornthwaite but close by are Keswick, Braithwaite and attractions like Derwentwater for its sailing and kayaking, The Whinlatter Visitors Centre with its ‘Go Ape’, mountain biking and children’s play area, Mire house, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the lake and Armathwaite Hall for luxury afternoon teas.
