It was awesome the house was and the village/town of alston was so quaint and lovely, the people were very friendly and helpful. We only had a few days there but will definitely be returning for a longer spell.     • “Lantern House, is based right in the middle of the market town of Alston which meant there was every amenity literally on our doorstep e.g. co-op, butcher, tea shops, chemist as well as numerous pubs and places for walking. The house itself has recently been refurbished and it has been done to a very high standard. With a very contemporary feel, the decor and furnishings etc are a delight. There is plenty of room for 2 families to stay there comfortably and with a playroom as well as a lounge, the adults could have their own 'space'! The utility/boot room on the ground floor was ideal to store all wet outdoor wear and with bedrooms on the 3rd and 4th floors, in an evening the adults could relax in the ground floor lounge, safe in the knowledge were were unlikely to wake up the children! The house has plenty of storage in all rooms and has been kitted out to cater to every need, whether it be for children (e.g. stair gates for every floor, loads of books and games in playroom) or the adults (e.g. very well equipped kitchen, study and Wi-fi available). Therefore, despite the poor weather, this was an excellent choice for a holiday rental over new year, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.”

The Property

Lantern House is located in Alston close to the Eden Valley and Northumberland borders. The property provides a contemporary style accommodation over four floors for all the family, with lounge, playroom four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Lantern cottage would be suitable for a family holiday for those wanting to explore the Northern Pennines.
Alston is steeped in history and was featured in the filming of Oliver Twist, starring Julie Walters, due to its characterful cobbled streets and period architecture. Local attractions include the South Tynedale narrow gauge railway and Killhope Water Wheel both located nearby. It has numerous nature walks to explore the surrounding landscapes, rivers, waterfalls, woodlands and wildlife. Lantern House is a four story period townhouse dating from the 17th Century located in the conservation area of Alston overlooking the cobbled Front Street, Market Place and Market Cross with amenities on the doorstep, the townhouse provides ideal holiday accommodation for families or groups with spacious accommodation over four floors. The townhouse is decorated and furnished in a contemporary style.
The gas centrally heated cottage comprises:
Ground floor: Study with work station and free Wi-Fi.
Lounge overlooking the Market Place wall mounted flat screen television.
Utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, WC and hand basin.
First Floor:Kitchen/dining room equipped with oven, glass ceramic hob, microwave, two fridges, dishwasher and dining area overlooking the Front Street and Market Place.
Children’s playroom with games, wall mounted flat screen television and DVD player.

Second Floor: Double bedroom.
Small double bedroom.
Bathroom with shower over bath, hand basin and WC.

Third Floor: Double bedroom.
Bunk bedroom with occasional use children's Z-bed.

ALSTON Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles. Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which is currently being extended and will run from Alston through to Slaggyford from 2017. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
