“This was the perfect cottage in the most perfect area.”

Beautiful countryside on the doorstep. If you want to get away from it all, then this really is the spot, without being too far from the nearest town of Ambleside. The cottage was very comfortable, everything we needed was there. Will definitely be booking again

The property

Acorn Cottage is a spacious, high-quality terraced cottage, sitting in a row of eight properties that were formerly owned by Beatrix Potter. Situated in Bakestone Barrow Wood, enjoying an elevated position on the outskirts of the village of Coniston, this wonderful three-storey property is ideal for a family or group wanting to escape to a tranquil location and explore the scenic beauty of the Lake District. Entering the property, you will find the sitting room, filled with charm and stunning features, with a woodburning stove nestled into a feature fireplace and eye-catching original flagged flooring, while the book shelves provide a range of books you can enjoy curled up in the armchair, and the two sofas offer further places to relax whilst watching TV or admiring the incredible countryside views from the window. The kitchen/diner features the same original flooring, along with a host of appliances and amenities you will need during your stay, including a dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer, along with granite worktops and a former feature fireplace, while the dining table is the perfect space to sit down together to enjoy a meal and to plan upcoming adventures. Upstairs you will find two bathrooms, which should limit queues forming in the mornings, with a choice of shower over bath and a shower room with a walk-in shower, while the first of three bedrooms, a generous double, decorated with bright, neutral tones, featuring a lovely window seat which you can admire the view from, is also located on this floor. The second floor hosts the remaining two bedrooms; a spacious single Velux window and plenty of storage, plus a double bedroom with built in wardrobes and a Velux window, which allows you to enjoy the view from the comfort of your bed. Outside there is off-road parking for two cars and a private shed for bike storage, along with a generous shared garden with a lawn and a patio area complete with picnic bench, where you can enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sunshine. Just three miles from the cottage is the village of Coniston, offering a selection of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants, along with a host of attractions, including The Ruskin Museum. Walkers and cyclists will find many scenic trails to enjoy, while adventurers will enjoy the challenging hike up The Old Man of Coniston, where you can admire views of Coniston Water from the top, or if you don't feel like a hike, you can explore the lake in style on the National Trust's Steam Yacht Gondola. Enjoy varied Lake District landscapes with a walk along the many woodland trails of Grizedale Forest and through Tarn Hows, where you can stop and have a picnic, while literature fans will appreciate the many Beatrix Potter attractions in the nearby area. The National Trust-owned Hill Top is one of the author's former homes, while the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead is dedicated to the writer, offering a glimpse into her life, and the picturesque Esthwaite Water is thought to be the inspiration of much of her work, along with that of poet William Wordsworth. Slightly further afield is popular Bowness-on-Windermere and Lake Windermere, where you can explore your picturesque surroundings on foot, bicycle or by boat, enjoy panoramic views from the top of Orrest Head, and explore the grounds of Wray Castle, a 19th century Victorian neo-gothic property owned by the National Trust. Acorn Cottage provides a perfect base from which to explore the outstanding Lake District countryside.
