“We enjoyed our stay, the house is spacious, warm and very well-equipped.”

The beds are really comfortable, the house is generally clean apart from a thick layer of dust on top of the curtains on the main landing. The views are lovely and it is very peaceful. Excellent pub, the Wilson’s Arms, within walking distance. However, it’s an old house and is looking in need of attention in places. There is too much clutter in cupboards, consequently not a lot of storage for own food in kitchen. Some of the wardrobes had so much spare bedding, it was difficult to hang clothes. The annexe in particular suffered from the following problems: very little storage space and what little hanging space there was, made difficult by surplus bedding. In the shower room there’s an extremely noisy fan which needs replacing and the light pull above the washbasin is broken. The glass shelf over the basin makes the basin almost impossible to use. You need to pay attention when using the toilet, the room is so tiny you risk burning your leg on the radiator. There are missing curtain hooks in this bedroom and in the dining room. Three of the bedrooms were equipped with emergency torches but only one of them worked. It would have been useful to have had spare bin liners and a hand towel in the kitchen. It’s worth noting that the lane to the house was being used by a large tractor which in places had churned up the track making it very muddy by the entrance gate.

Thank you for your feedback - we do rely on guests to help us keep up with what needs repairing - when it's your own house sometimes we don't notice! Now there are rechargeable torches in addition to those with standard batteries. The small shower-room is limited by having 18" thick walls externally and we have had to decide to put a standard sized wc in (2 years ago it was all redone), instead of a smaller wc. Hence the closeness of the radiator. The fan is noisy because it has to be at a 15' angle in the wall unfortunately. The light pull is now fixed. The beds and lounge sofas were all expensively replaced two years ago with highest quality replacements. Many of the solid wood furniture pieces are antiques, and all the artwork on the walls throughout the house are originals. The house was built on the fell around 1850. Sadly the forest behind the property has suffered greatly from storms and larch disease and is being felled by order - the equipment to do this has damaged the roadway which is still ongoing. Thank you for your useful comments and we hope you will come again for another stay. Property Owner

The property

A detached property, set amidst 8 acres of woodland and gardens, backed by the Coniston Ranges in the hamlet of Torver, is High Torver House. This large, whitewashed property is perched on the fell slopes and provides commanding views across the valley, sleeping eight guests, making it ideal for a large family or group looking to enjoy a tranquil Lake District escape. Heading through the back door, you will be met with a handy cloakroom, where you can leave muddy coats and boots after a day of exploring, before entering the well-equipped kitchen, complete with a host of mod-cons, including an oven and dishwasher, with more handy amenities, such as a freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer, found in the utility room. The snug is a cosy space for relaxing together in front of the woodburning stove, or simply admiring your surrundings from the patio door, which opens up onto a terrace with outdoor furniture. From the snug, a staircase takes you up to a king-size double bedroom with an en-suite shower room, making this part of the house a standalone annexe if needed. Coming back down the stairs, follow the period Minton-tiled hallway towards the dining room, which comfortably seats eight, an ideal space to enjoy home-cooked meals together, and the main sitting room has ample seating for everyone, along with a woodburning stove, TV and a bookcase filled with books you can curl up with and enjoy. Heading up the main staircase, you can relax on the pretty window seat, admiring the wonderful surrounding views on offer, while the remaining three bedrooms can be found on the first floor; two king-size doubles and a super-king-size with zip/link feature, all of which have been tastefully decorated, with exposed wooden floors and ample storage for your belongings. The incredible family bathroom has a stunning stained glass window, above the free-standing bath, along with a large separate walk-in shower, so you can choose how to prepare for each day. Outside, there is an adjacent barn with bike storage and an enclosed area for pets, plus parking for three cars, an enclosed lawn garden with a monkey-puzzle tree and an extensive patio, spanning the length of the house, with outdoor furniture, ideal for admiring the valley views in front of you while enjoying an alfresco lunch. The peaceful hamlet of Torver is an undiscovered gem, with two wonderful pubs serving food, as well Crake and Woodland valleys, Torver Common and Beacon Tarn, all well worth exploring. This area of the Lake District is very popular with walkers and cyclists of all abilities wanting to escape the central Lakes crowds.
