Regional Information

KELSO Jedburgh 14 miles; Wooler 16 miles. Kelso is a lovely tranquil Borders town at the meeting point of the Tweed and Teviot rivers, with a cobbled town square and streets, and an array of stunning Georgian buildings, and a wealth of gorgeous countryside around it. Take time out to visit Floors Castle, a very prominent Stately Home with restaurants and gardens, designed by William Adam. Also close by are Mellerstain House, Kelso Abbey and the Kelso races. Mellerstain House is a stunning example of Georgian architecture at its finest. Designed by the architect William Adam and his son Robert in 1725, it is the residence of the 13th Earl of Haddington. The house is located within 80 acres of luscious rolling parkland and is in walking distance of Smailholm Tower, the ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott. Great fishing can be enjoyed on the Teviot, Tweed and Jed rivers and there are many excellent golf courses to choose from. Watch the spectacular and historic Common Ridings, held at Hawick, Selkirk, Langholm, Lauder and others, with long histories. The Borders also offer some superb walking and cycling, be it on the coast, over the breathtaking hillsides or amongst the enchanting Border forests.
