Ambleside has been lived in since pre-Roman times; however, it is now for the most part a Victorian town. Housing around 500 soldiers, the Romans built a fort beside Borrans Park which was called Glava. The Armitt Museum can provide you with further information about these people and many others who have passed through Ambleside. A short walk from the centre will take you to a stunning waterfall, Stock Ghyll Force, and it can be easily viewed from a railed viewpoint. The custom of the Rushbearing Festival is celebrated every year on the first Saturday of July.
