The property

This magnificent, detached cottage is located in Bowness-on-Solway near Wigton and Carlisle, on the edge of the Solway Coast. With mesmerising, uninterrupted views stretching across the bay to the Solway Firth and Scotland beyond, this cottage makes an ideal base for families and couples exploring this charming corner of Cumbria. Set solely on the ground floor, the cottage has two cosy bedrooms, a luxury bathroom with a double-ended bath, and a superb shower room. There is an open plan living area, beautifully furnished and equipped ensuring your stay will be perfect. The dramatic scenery is brought inside with large, feature French windows opening out on to a beautiful decking area, so no matter what the weather you will always be able to admire the scenery. From the cottage, steps enjoy direct access down to the shore where in season you may observe the unique and traditional style of fishing in the Solway Firth called Haaf Netters. The Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail starts in the village and stretches right across the country to the east coast, and whilst guests may wish to walk the 73 miles to Wallsend, having a superb pub serving delicious fare at the very start may delay your departure! A wonderful way to explore the Solway Coast, an Area of Outstanding National Beauty and World Heritage Site, is by bicycle and although the Hadrian’s Cycleway also runs through the village, there are also numerous other circular routes on hand. Wildlife lovers can embrace the local nature reserves with both Dumbrugh Moss and the South Solway Mosses close by, and positioned right on the edge of the estuary at this Bowness-on-Solway cottage, you are already in a renowned World Ramsar site for marine birds. Being close to the border of Scotland, Carlisle, known as the border city, is well worth a visit, or how about a day at the races? Cross the border just into Scotland and visit Gretna Green, just over 20 miles away. Whatever your reason to visit this fascinating area and this fabulous cottage, you will undoubtedly wish you had found this idyllic location years ago and will look forward to enjoying the superb accommodation again and again!

About the location

BOWNESS-ON-SOLWAY

Wigton 10 miles; Carlisle 13 miles.

The village of Bowness-on-Solway lies within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to the west of the city of Carlisle. The village has a pub and a tea room and Hadrian’s Wall stretches from the village to Wallsend near Newcastle for some 73 miles, with the walk being defined as a ‘National Trail’. The surrounding area is rich in bird life visiting the sand dunes, salt marsh, shingle beds, and peat mosses, and there are many viewpoints and lay-bys, perfect for spotting the waders: oystercatchers, curlew, golden and grey plover, lapwing, knot, dunlin, bar-tailed and black-tailed godwit, redshank, and turnstone. In 1869 a rail line, the Solway Junction Railway, was opened between Bowness and Annan in Scotland, connecting to the Maryport and Carlisle railway. The 1 mile and 176 yard long iron girder viaduct across the water was damaged by an ice build-up in 1875, and again in 1881. It was repaired and continued as a passenger train until 1914 when it became a freight train until 1921, before finally being demolished in 1934. Nearby, the market town of Wigton and the city of Carlisle are popular centres for shopping, pubs and restaurants. Wigton also has a weekly market taking place every Friday and also boasts a theatre. The Victorian seaside resort of Silloth is 16 miles away, whilst Keswick and the heart of the Lake District are reached in 40 minutes' by car. A wonderful base for exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.

Please note: Solway Cottage is situated in the grounds of the owner's property, Maia House. All outlooks are across the Solway Firth estuary towards Scotland.
